Hungry for Music Notes
September 2016
Hungry for Music is an organization that supports music education and cultural enrichment by acquiring and distributing quality musical instruments to underserved children with willing instructors and a hunger to play.
Notes from the Road
by Jeff Campbell, Hungry for Music Executive Director

August 2016 was a record-breaking month for Hungry for Music. We distributed over 200 instruments to music programs in need, nearly doubling our previous record month! Some of the recipients include programs that we have supported in the past: Intonation Music, Junior Appalachian Musicians, Inc, Detroit Public Schools, and Rock to the Future in Philadelphia. New programs we supported in August include Campus International in Cleveland, Livingston Collegiate in New Orleans, Prizm Music Program in Memphis, and Anthropos Arts in Austin. We also made a donation to a program that will bring instruments to children in Pandan Bay, Phillipines.

The "we" that makes this happen is a community network that support us with their time and resources. For example, here is a partial list that includes the individuals and organizations that make up this network and made the August donations possible:

ARK LA TEX Music Heritage Festival Foundation (support)
Christopher Alexander Law Firm (support)
Colin Baxter (brass & woodwind repair)

On Saturday, September 10, we were part of a book signing, instrument drive, and live music event at Barnes and Noble; with music provided by the Glimpses. A percentage of the day's proceeds were donated to Hungry for Music. Many thanks to author Leslie Welch, the Glimpses, and the Barnes and Noble staff for making it a successful day!
Squeezebox Mania!
Next month, we're doing an instrument drive in partnership with Squeezebox Mania and Strait Music Company in Austin, Texas. Instruments will be collected at Strait Music, 13945 Highway183 North, in Austin, from October 3 through 8, culminating with the tenth annual Squeezebox Mania concert on October 8.
Founded by accordionist Joel Guzman and singer/ songwriter Sarah Fox Guzman, Squeezebox Mania is Austin's accordion musical festival. This year's event will feature performances by Joe King Carrasco, Sean Ardoin & Zydekool, the Flying Balalaika Brothers, and Los Aztex.
Avett Brothers Give Back!
We are honored and excited to be one of three non-profits chosen to benefit from the Avett Brothers and Cheerwine Indiegogo campaign,as well as their Legendary Giveback5 concert on November 19.

We'll have more info on the concert soon. In the meantime, you can check out the Indiegogo fundraiser page.
Notre Dame Instrument Drive
It's football season and we're looking forward to the September 24 face-off between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Duke Blue Devils. This year, in partnership with the Spirit of Harmony Foundation, we are conducting an instrument drive at Notre Dame.

We'll be collecting instruments at Joyce Field House on Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24, until kick-off time.

We are excited about the weekend and grateful to Todd Rundgren for promoting the mission of Hungry for Music during his week-long Notre Dame visit.

Magic Music Bus on the Move!

A few weeks ago, in collaboration with Todd Rundgren's Spirit of Harmony Foundation, we delivered 75 brass instruments to the Livingston Collegiate Academy in New Orleans. They were a new school with an empty music closet and now they are ready to get their band program in motion!
Volunteers Still Needed
We are still recruiting volunteers to sell CDs at Foreigner concerts in the following cities:

OCT 14 - Valley Center, CA
OCT 15 - Laughlin, NV

HFM Throwback

On September 17, 1992, Hungry for Music was born.

The initial concept was to bring street musicians and other Washington, DC music talent together for a concert called Hungry for Music, in support of the Coalition Against Homelessness. These concerts were held in 1992 and 1993 and also included food drives.

We've come a long way!

In the Spotlight
We recently donated instruments and music supplies to the Pandan Bay Foundation, in support of their youth band in the Phillippines.

"We can't thank you enough for this generous donation. It means a lot to the kids in Pandan who now have the chance to attend college with the help of music." Chrissie Ordinario
